Burning the Waste
Burning the waste does not produce methane, however, it emits nearly 1% of the nation's total carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide emissions. Nitrous oxide has an estimated 250-300 times the global-warming potential of carbon dioxide.
All three of these gases are targeted by the Kyoto Protocol, aimed at reducing greenhouse-gas emissions in the world's most industrialized nations by 2010.
