Landfilling the Waste

Although carbon dioxide is the most prevalent greenhouse gas, methane gas is much more potent-with 21 times as much global-warming potential. Methane is created when organic material buried deep under layers of other garbage and earth decomposes without oxygen, or 'anaerobically'.

Although 41 landfills in Canada recover the gas and flare it or use it to generate electricity, most methane emissions are released into the atmosphere.

Landfills are responsible for nearly one-quarter of the total methane emissions produced in Canada.
